Evan's Eyes

Long time, no post...I started out this year saying I was going to blog more and try to get all of our everyday stuff down.  I love reading about the boys from months ago, about all the things they were doing and I don't want to look back and not have anything to read because I was a slacker.  So...here's to hoping I am a little better the month of February...lots of stuff coming up...like Christmas {2 months late} and the birthday party {3 months late, ha!}.  I'm slowly going through the almost 900 pictures {yes, 900 PICTURES!} my dad took while we were in California...slightly overwhelming but I'm getting there.

So...on to the real reason for this post...

Back when the boys turned two we noticed that Evan's left eye was slightly turning in.  Not a lot but enough to be concerned.  At their two year check up his doctor looked at his eyes and noticed that they weren't tracking the same so he was referred to a pediatric opthamologist to have it further looked at.  What was determined at our appointment is that he is far-sighted in both of his eyes and since everything is blurry up close he is using his right eye to try and focus resulting in the left eye turning in and not working or being "lazy."  At first the doctor thought surgery was our only option to fix it but since both eyes are far-sighted and there is not a huge difference between the two we started with glasses and patching.

So...everyday since the middle of December we have been putting a drop in Evan's right "good eye" to dilate it so that his left eye is forced to work to see.  It's very easy, doesn't seem to bother him and he goes on about the day as if we didn't do anything to his eye.  The only thing he hates is being held down to get the drop in the eye.  The glasses on the other hand have been a little more of a struggle...he hates them and most days refuses to wear them.  We have tried to make it as positive of an experience as possible but it's hard getting a two year old {who hates tags, coats, hats and anything else out of the ordinary} to wear glasses ALL DAY LONG.

He has worn them a few times for 10-15 minutes a time but nothing longer.  Finally yesterday I got him to wear them and he kept them on for close to 2 HOURS!!  I took lots of pictures because who knows when it will happen again...like today when he is refusing to put them on again.  Here are a few of my favorites...

What he usually does when they go on...pulls them right off.  Yesterday he happened to put them back on.

We spent a good part of the two hours throwing the basketball back and forth.  I thought the longer I distracted him the longer they might stay on.

Hopefully he'll get better and better everyday with the glasses.  I'm probably biased but I think he looks pretty stinkin' cute in them.

The look great! Miles started wearing glasses shortly after turning 2, but our problem wasn't him keeping them on but keeping his sister from ripping them off his face and hiding them. :-) Good luck. Eventually he'll figure out he can see better with them.
